In 1957, Yılmabaşar won an AFS scholarship to study at the AlbanyUnion High School in the U.S. She entered the ceramics departmentof the School of Higher Learning in Applied Fine Arts in 1958. Sheopened her first solo exhibition in 1963. In 1966, she also graduatedfrom the ballet department and became a faculty member at thisinstitution. She won gold medals at the ceramics competitionsshe partook in Italy and Germany in 1968 and 1969, respectively.Yılmabaşar won first place at the 1970 AKM Ceramics Competitionand opened her Düsseldorf exhibition in 1971. In 1972, her workswere made part of the permanent collection of theHetjens Ceramic Museum. She became the firstfemale ceramics professor of Turkey in 1985. Shecelebrated her 30th year in art with an exhibitionshe opened in Paris in 1991. She continues to workon her paintings and ceramics out of her studios inİstanbul and Munich.
Yılmabaşar is currently a facultymember at the Marmara University’s Faculty of FineArts. Yılmabaşar opened exhibitions in Switzerland,Germany, Denmark, Australia, the U.S.A., Thailand,Mexico, France and Turkey. Her works are displayedat the Hetjens Museum in Germany, Faenza Museumin Italy, Benaki Museum in Greece, as well as theVanderbilt-Webb Collection (New York) and theWinthrop Collection in the U.S.A. Yılmabaşarwas granted the title “State Artist” in 1998.
