Fernando Botero

While he was still entertaining dreams of becoming a bullfighter in his younger days and trained as a matador in Medellin, Botero was charged by a 300-kilo bull and was forced to give up this passion to become a painter and a sculptor. Although the voluptuousness of his figures stands out as a defining feature of his distinctive visual language, the creative expression that the artist has displayed since the age of seventeen cannot simply be confined to this particular aspect of his work. Since 1951, Botero assumed an important place in art agendas with his prolificacy and international accomplishments, strengthening his career with critical awards.

During his period of maturity in New York in the 1960s, Botero became the pride of his country and evolved into one of the stars of the international art milieu. When he was living in Paris in 1973, he started working on sculptures as well and his works were included in museum collections. As Botero carried his conception of form to three-dimensionality, colossal works in terms of both artistic value and physical scale were born out of the relationship he established between volume and mass.
